What is a CSA program you ask? CSA stands for community supported agriculture. It is a direct relationship between the farmer and the consumer. They purchase a "share" in the farm for the duration of the season. You share the risks and the rewards of growing food. It is a commitment to supporting the farmer and a commitment to yourself (and family) to eat lots of fresh locally grow nutritious vegetables. A CSA program is very convenient! You don't have to worry about going to buy vegetables or what you are going to eat during the week. The farmer chooses what veggies comes in the share and its automatically delivered to your pick up location every week. Check out the Vegetables page on my website for a list of what I grow. Mostly staple veggies like lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Maybe an herb like basil or cilantro will pop up. There will also be storage tips and recipes shared in the weekly newsletter before you pick up your bag of vegetables. Farmers love CSA because it is a guaranteed market for their vegetables, so its very easy to plan how much to plant and grow and harvest, without worrying if if it will sell or not. It allows us to pay our bills on time and our employees each week. Something I am doing this year is paying my employees higher than minimum wage to help them see farming as a career and want to stay - rather than just a summer job for students.
This summer I will be joining farm companies with my fiancé Lloyd Parker. Lloyd has made the transition from working for another farm while also at the same time trying to get his family farm going again and bringing the cranberry bogs back into production and transitioned them to certified organic. To leaving that job and going 100% on the home farm. I rent farmland from Lloyd's mother and have expanded my business to fit Lloyd in and make enough income for the two of us to live on. Farmers markets haven't been enough, especially with the pandemic keeping crowds away. I also find Saturday morning isn't a reasonable time for families to go grocery shopping and many like to go away for the weekends in the summer. So I decided to get back into CSA after many years of putting the program on pause. This time I have the Wolfville farmers market online store and delivery system to help me reach more than just local people. WFM2Go will be handling all the sign up and payment and delivery for me. Which allows me to stay on the farm and focus on growing you all the delicious vegetables.
